Review & approve plans before Notion AI runs

Learn how to work with Plan Mode to view and sign-off on changes before Notion Agent takes action ☑
Plan Mode helps you and your Notion Agent plan first, then act. When you turn it on, your Agent creates a plan you can preview before it makes changes.
Use Plan Mode when you want extra confidence before your Agent makes changes, like when you’re asking it to:
Edit several pages.
Update a database (especially many rows or properties).
Do a multi-step task where the request could be interpreted more than one way.
When you turn on Plan Mode, your Notion Agent will ask a few clarifying questions about what you want (sometimes using multiple-choice format). Then, your Agent will create a plan page describing what it will do. You can review and adjust the plan via chat if needed.
Once you approve the plan, your Agent will make the changes.
Open Notion AI chat.
Go to
Settings→Mode→Plan.
When Plan Mode is on, Notion Agent won’t make edits while it’s planning. It will focus on gathering context, asking questions, and writing up a plan.
To reduce ambiguity, Notion Agent may ask questions before it writes a plan. Sometimes these questions will be multiple choice.
Your Agent might ask:
Which page or database should I use as the source of truth?
Which section should I edit?
Do you want a rewrite, a summary, or a format cleanup?
If you aren’t seeing the question you need, you can always reply with more details in the chat.
Once your Agent has enough context, it will create a plan page that usually includes:
A goal
The steps it will take
A preview of what will change (for example, which pages it will edit)
Risks or things it needs you to confirm
Read through the plan and confirm it matches what you intended. If something looks off, tell your Agent what to change and it will revise the plan.
When you are ready, select Approve plan.
After you approve, Notion Agent will implement the plan and make the changes it described.
If you’re not ready, don’t approve the plan yet. Ask for a smaller scope or a revised approach until you have the right plan in place.
You need to turn on Plan Mode: Notion Agent can’t switch on Plan Mode automatically.
Planning is read-only: Notion Agents won’t make edits until you approve the plan.
Plan pages are regular Notion pages: You can keep them for reference or share them with your team.
Availability may vary by surface: Plan Mode is designed for the Notion Agent chat experience. If you don’t see it, it may not be available for you.
